AAPPR Board Corner: Out of Office
The Story
As the year winds down, many recruiters will have hours of vacation time that will go unused. In a recent article, AAPPR calls for recruiters to become comfortable with unapologetically prioritizing time away from the office – something we’re often encouraging providers to do, too. If you’re waiting for a sign to use it, this is your reminder to consider taking some time to recharge.

What You Should Know
Although the fall tends to be a busy time of year within the healthcare recruiting community due to conferences and other events, there’s still time to pencil in time off. Whether you take a mental health day here and there or plan a longer trip away, the time is there for you to use it. As the final months of the calendar approach, take some time to make memories and focus on whatever it is that brings you joy.

Understanding Physician Compensation Models and RVUs
The Story
Physician compensation models can be complex, and many providers rely on recruiters to explain distinctions. In the most popular model, the hospital-employed physician compensation model, physicians receive a guaranteed base salary. As they become more established, compensation may shift Relative Value Units (RVU compensation).

What You Should Know
Being able to explain RVU compensation to providers can help them to see the value in compensation packages. Physicians receive an amount of wRVUs (the work they perform) for each exam or procedure. There are also RVUs assigned by Medicare, taking into consideration the complexity of procedures. Additionally, wRVUs should account for the provider’s clinical skills, overhead costs, and other factors. To calculate a physician’s total RVU, their wRVUs are multiplied by a conversion factor of a specific dollar amount. While there are other pay models available, such as private practice compensation, understanding this popular model can be particularly helpful for both you and your providers.

The 5 Best States to Practice Medicine: What You Should Know
The Story
Physicians have to weigh many factors when deciding which state to practice in. A recent study looked at criteria such as average annual pay, hospitals per capita, hospitals’ safety grades, and the overall quality of health systems to determine the best states to practice medicine. Three of the top five states are located in the Midwest.

What You Should Know
According to the 2022 study, the best five states to practice medicine are South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, and Idaho. Perks of working in these states include factors such as high quality of life, physician satisfaction, and low insurance rates, among others. For healthcare systems in states that may not be able to compete with the income levels of some of the nation’s largest cities and the allure of coastal areas, leveraging these benefits can be a powerful tool for attracting physician candidates.

Leadership Reflections

Transitions
While in the midst of numerous transitions both personally and professionally, I am reminded of the familiar quote by Heraclitus, “The only constant in life is change.” We are wired to be creatures of habit and while change is necessary for growth, it can create anxiety — it certainly does for me. So how do we as leaders minimize the stress and maximize the benefits of change? Consider leading your team through these steps:

  1. Allow time for reflection. Reflecting on fears helps you learn what specifically is causing anxiety and determine potential solutions.
  2. Utilize communication and collaboration. Communicating throughout change helps transitions run more smoothly, creates a collaborative environment, and gives the team a sense of ownership in the process.
  3. Be flexible and embrace mistakes. Prioritizing flexibility and allowing mistakes to happen as a natural part of the process can minimize conflicts along the way.
  4. Practice wellness. Implementing wellness practices can help you weather stressful times of change with your health intact.
  5. Stay centered on your purpose. Remembering the meaning behind your work helps to reduce stress and generate ideas for new opportunities while moving through the change.
If your organization is going through significant change, I encourage you to look into change management resources. Consider starting with this overview: Everything you need to know about change management.
