| TAVR patients with cancer face higher risks of hospital readmission, serious bleeding

| In a study examining data from more than 122,000 patients from 2012 to 2019, interventional cardiologists recently determined cancer patients do not face a greater risk of in-hospital mortality following TAVR than patients without cancer. Yet, there are other risks, including a heightened risk of major bleeding requiring transfusion and hospital readmission. Certain types of cancer were also associated with a higher risk of permanent pacemaker implantation. |

| While TAVR outcomes for patients with cancer can be hard to predict, undergoing the procedure may allow patients to start or continue their cancer treatment successfully. Long-term follow-up data is needed to better understand outcomes of TAVR on cancer patients, but these findings suggest that it may be a treatment option for some patients. With that in mind, it’s critical to weigh the risks and take an individualized approach to determine if the benefits of TAVR are worthwhile.

| Biden's AI Plan Spurs 'Cautious Optimism' in Healthcare

| In a recent executive order, President Biden has aimed to establish guidelines for the ethical use of AI to protect Americans against its potential risks. While the order contains little detail regarding healthcare systems specifically, the President has given the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department six months to develop a strategy to determine if AI meets standards for healthcare delivery, and has urged them to create a task force for responsible AI use within the year.

| While many health system executives and industry analysts note that the U.S. is lagging behind other countries in terms of AI regulation within healthcare, many have still reacted positively to the executive order and have acknowledged that it’s a step in the right direction. Many healthcare leaders recognize that AI could positively impact healthcare delivery, especially in understaffed areas like rural communities. Yet, they also stress the need to develop strategies and safeguards to avoid worsening existing inequities with AI.

| Cardiologists, heart surgeons and imaging experts push for changes that could prevent ‘permanent and unjustifiable Medicare cuts’ |

| The American College of Cardiology, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and several other medical societies focused on cardiology have joined over a hundred other groups in support of the proposed Provider Reimbursement Stability Act of 2023. Set forth in October, the policy would reform budget-neutrality policies and limit Medicare cuts physicians face. If signed into law, the policy would enforce a $53 million budget-neutrality threshold, compared to the existing $20 million, with an increase every five years based on the Medicare Economic Index. |

| Societies in support of the proposed act have praised the representatives who introduced the policy, all of whom are experienced medical professionals. Advocates note that the policy would help physicians enjoy greater financial viability amid challenges like inflation, especially in underserved communities. Providers are hopeful that this proposal, along with The Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act, will positively impact care by 2025.

Sustainability in Healthcare Staffing
The post-pandemic financial landscape for healthcare organizations has been a rollercoaster ride, marked by unprecedented challenges. Hospitals have undergone a process of recovery and adaptation; however, concerns remain regarding sustainability. This is especially true as hospitals continue to grapple with staffing shortages, supply chain disruptions, and fluctuating patient volumes.
